Long before modern roads and villages shaped the landscape, the riverbanks of Sodankylä in Finnish Lapland were home to something far older , a place known as siljo. Today, this quiet region still holds deep cultural roots, making it one of the most authentic destinations in the Arctic.

What is a Siljo?

A siljo was not just a place , it was a way of life. These traditional Sámi settlements were home to families living closely with nature and their reindeer. The ground was shaped by movement, migration, and survival in extreme Arctic conditions.

Siljos also functioned as:

  • Gathering points

  • Small marketplaces

  • Cultural meeting places

They were the heart of Sámi community life in the wilderness.

Ancient Traditions & Arctic Survival

Life in Lapland was guided by deep traditions. One unique custom was how hunters returned home. After hunting, they could not enter through the main entrance of their tent. Instead, they used a smaller opening at the back , a ritual connected to respect, protection, and spiritual beliefs.

These traditions reflect a powerful connection between people, nature, and survival ,something that still defines the Arctic lifestyle today.

Archaeology & Early History

Sodankylä is not only rich in stories ,it is backed by history. Archaeologists have discovered:

  • Remains of ancient dwellings

  • Everyday objects

  • Coins dating back to the early 1700s

These findings confirm that this region has long been inhabited and played an important role in Arctic life.

Legends of the North

Local folklore tells of a battle between Sámi people and Russian forces. According to legend, the Sámi , armed with bows and defeated enemies carrying firearms.

After the battle, the spoils were divided, but instead of valuable arrows, only fire strikers remained. Disappointed, the Sámi leader is said to have remarked on the loss.

Although no physical evidence has been found, this story lives on as part of Sodankylä’s cultural identity , where history and legend blend together.
