Northern Strength, Real Journeys

The Meaning of SISU

SISU is a unique Finnish word that describes a deep inner strength and determination.

It means having the courage to continue even when things are difficult, uncomfortable, or uncertain. SISU is about resilience, perseverance, and quiet confidence , especially in challenging situations.

Finnish History and SISU

Originally, SISU  describe inner strength, courage, and determination, especially when facing difficult situations.

The term has been used in Finnish language for hundreds of years, appearing in early Finnish texts as a way to describe a person’s character and mental toughness. Rather than a single action, SISU became associated with a deep, enduring quality, the ability to continue despite hardship. The idea of SISU has played a significant role throughout Finnish history, especially during times of hardship. One of the most well-known examples is during the Winter War (1939–1940), when Finland defended itself against a much larger invading force.
